"At the beginning, [musks] were only used in fine fragrances because natural musk was very precious,” explains Kurkdjian. “Later on, synthetic musk became more and more popular among perfumers because it gave fragrances an indescribable aura with long-lasting effects. This development later led to the discovery of several different types of synthetic musk notes with different facets, including powdery, clean, animal, fruity, woody, etc.”

Loved for its persistence and multi-faceted aroma, musk is most commonly celebrated for its versatility. It appears as part of the top, middle, and base notes and can be used to either soften and balance a fragrance or extend its longevity. In other words, it can have a little bit of everything, which is why it will be difficult to find a perfume that doesn't have at least some percentage of musk in its ingredient list.
