New Year, new beauty: How to set positive beauty goals

Start your new year with these cheerful beauty products

Each week, Marie Claire's Beauty and Style Director, Lisa Oxenham, shares her selection of products that will enhance your beauty routine. This week she focuses on six products that will take your beauty routine into 2022. From plastic-free razors to express tanning, here's what she's reviewing this week...

Dermatology M Rose Otto Rejuvenating Cream, £68 | Dermatology M

The key to caring for normal to sensitive skin and skin affected by rosacea this time of year is to intensely hydrate, calm inflammation and strengthen the skin barrier. I use the Dermatology M Organic Rose Otto Rejuvenating Face Cream. Her brilliance lies in her background in traditional Chinese medicine and her underlying philosophy and belief that when redness occurs, blood circulation stagnates and heat rises to the face, bringing inflammation. My skin is normal to sensitive so I try to avoid scented cleansers and creams and some traditional skin scrubs and chemical peels and load my skin with this moisturizer.

Zero Waste Club reusable stainless steel razor, £27 | Selfridges

One of my main goals this year is to reduce the amount of empty bathroom I accumulate. While I'm well on my way to zero waste thanks to reusable face pads and refillable hair care, I turned to my razors and found this metal razor from Zero Waste Club. It comes with ten recyclable, complimentary blades that are easy to swap out every time for a clean, eco-friendly shave. As a brand, SWC is committed to paying fair wages, compensating for single-use items, and planting trees—all things that every brand I invest in should strive to achieve. Look at her.

Aveda Invati Advanced Thickening Foam and Brow Serum, £56 | aveda

Rumors of the thin '90s eyebrows coming back over the New Year may have filled me with nostalgia, but I can assure you that mine (although more blonde than bushy) will remain exactly as they are. In fact, I recently got my hands on this thickening brow serum to make my brows look fuller. The gel stays in place throughout the day giving the appearance of a boost, and its active ingredients also nourish the roots. Ginseng, turmeric, and knotweed (which support natural keratin) work together to condition and soften hair, giving you a healthy-looking brow without a hint of nineties.

UpCircle Lemongrass Coffee Body Scrub, £14.99 | circle up

It can be difficult to stick to routines and schedules during the winter break, so this week I made an effort to rekindle my positive habits. One of these is exfoliating my body, which is my foolproof way of rebooting the skin and getting my blood pumping. This scrub has the most fragrant spa scent thanks to its tangy lemongrass and brightens my skin after one use. The scrub also gives me a caffeine and antioxidant kick made from repurposed Arabica coffee grounds that the team at UpCircle collected from craft coffee shops across the country. And if that wasn't enough, it's stored in 100% plastic-free packaging.

James Read Glow20 facial tanning serum, £25 | LOOKFANSTASTIC

We've all heard a thousand tips on how to improve our Zoom face, but for me, a quick tan is the quickest way to be ready for video calls in minutes. James Read Glow20 Facial Tanning Serum is an express product that works its magic in 20 minutes leaving my skin tanned and hydrated. I wash my hands immediately after applying it to my face (a key tip that wards off those telltale tanned palms), then leave it on for about half an hour before rinsing off so I can really get that holiday glow in one bottle benefit . The product is also vegan and formulated with a 100% naturally derived tanning agent, meaning it is free from harmful substances.

NUXE Huile Prodigieuse® Néroli Multipurpose Dry Oil, £29.50 | MRS

A key part of my daily routine is taking time to hydrate from head to toe, and a beauty goal that everyone should try to achieve as well. It also helps me instill a sense of balance and awareness of my body, which makes me feel empowered for the rest of the day. I recently enriched my routine with Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse, a dry oil that soothes my body, hair and nails. Organic botanical plum and sesame oils are complemented with subtle neroli to leave skin with a healthy glow and delightful fragrance. This multipurpose product is also COSMOS certified (aka great for the environment).
