Eyebrow Mapping Is The Secret to Getting Perfectly Shaped Eyebrows
Eyebrow trends are just as cyclical as fashion trends. One day it's all about thick, messy brows, and the next day thin and shaped arches are all the rage. Regardless, brow mapping is a constant that remains, a technique professionals rely on very often to create perfectly shaped brows (whatever that shape may be).
But here's the thing: If you love all things DIY beauty, you can use this pro technique at home because — spoiler alert — it's actually pretty easy. Here eyebrow experts explain what eyebrow mapping is and the easiest way to do it.
What is eyebrow mapping?
"Brow mapping is a process used to create symmetry between both brows when styling," explains celebrity brow stylist Melanie Marris, CEO and founder of Brow Code. "It's all about using multiple measurements across your brows and eyes to find the most flattering, even shape for your face," she says. Although the technique is generally standard (more on the details in a moment), it ultimately results in a completely customized end result, as it all depends on your unique eye and face shape. It's also one of the easiest ways to avoid making bigger mistakes, adds New York brow expert Azi Sacks, like a brow that's too thin or an arch that's pushed in too far.
How to do eyebrow mapping on yourself
It starts with using a brow pencil to mark three key points along each brow: the front, arch, and tail. "To find the front, place the end of your pencil vertically from the dimple of your nose to the inner corner of your eye and make note of where the pencil crosses your brow," says Marris.
To find the arch, place your pencil from the dimple of the nose towards the brow, but this time twist it slightly diagonally so it's in line with the outside of the iris - this is where the arch should be highest .
Finally, find where the end of your eyebrow should end by tilting your pencil from the side of your nostril to the corner of your eye closest to your ear. “These three points will help you determine the basic shape of your brow.
From there, outline the top of your brow by connecting these points with your brow pencil. Then outline the same shape along the bottom of your brow,” she suggests. (FYI, at this point it's up to you how thick you want it to be.)
Voila, you just drew your perfect brow shape! All that's left to do is pluck any brow hairs that lie outside the lines to create symmetry and tidy up your brows.
What you should consider when mapping eyebrows
While this technique is a great general guide to follow, it is not an exact science. While you definitely want your brows to be symmetrical, it's important to think of them as sisters and not twins. The hairs in each brow can end up growing a little differently, and one can even have a twirl while another doesn't, Sacks points out. The point is that you have to work with the brows you have, so don't get too fixated on making sure every single hair looks exactly the same.
Second, especially when it comes to removing the excess hair, go slowly. Going back in and removing more is a lot easier than growing new hair, especially as we age. “Our brow growth cycle slows with age, and it can be difficult to regrow brow hairs in sparse areas. When it comes to mapping and removing hair that's out of shape, less is always more,” Marris warns. Avoid the urge to get happy with the tweezers and instead pluck one hair at a time and constantly re-evaluate how things are looking.
Finally, if you're not feeling very confident in your skills and/or your brows are very overgrown, Marris suggests seeing a professional. Even a one-time visit where he or she shapes your eyebrows can help you prepare for future success at home. Once they create the original shape, you can easily maintain it at home with eyebrow mapping, she adds.
